Juniors In Literacy 1983 (JIL1983) offers free services and help with the following areas:


  • interpreting forms for Housing, Recreation Sports and Camp, Transportation, Immigration

  • interpreting forms for Education, Pension, SIN, Passport, Social Services, Computer Grants

  • assisting in filling out forms for adults

  • providing referral letters to third parties on behalf of parents who request them (minimum acquaintance time 6 months)

Student Helps

  • facilitating Numeracy, Math, English to all learners JK to Gr 8

  • monitoring of Social Skills and interactions

  • facilitating On Line Editing Services to students in Gr 9-12

  • facilitating On Line Editing Services to  University and College Students including parents in Upgrading and Career Retraining Programs, in all subjects

  • conducting Scholarship Research and University Application PreparationWorkshops for Gr 11 and 12 students

Partnerships with Toronto Public Library

  • partnering with Toronto Public Library to administering the TD Bank– Summer Book Reading Club

  • encouraging parents to utilize the services of the Toronto Public Library for the Leading to Reading Program

  • Hosting the Librarian for Meet the Parents, Discuss Early years Reading Strategies, Book Display at our locations

Partnerships with Red Cross

  • promoting and coordinating student registrations for Canadian Red Cross Babysitter’s Course,

  • promoting and coordinating student  registrations for First Aid, CPR with AED Training

  • Acquiring TCHC rental space for hosting above Health  Training Courses

  • Hosting TorontoCPR Red Cross Certified Trainers for Health Training Courses

Promoting Community Support Groups

  • encouraging parents to utilize the services of Four Villages Health Centre

  • encouraging parents  to utilize the services of the TCHC on-site Food Banks

  • hosting Nursing Personnel from Four Villages Health Centre for Needs Analysis

  • hosting ECE Supervisory Personnel from Ontario Early Years Program for Needs Analysis High Park and the Junction areas

  • encouraging parents to utilize the services of the Ontario Early Years Centre-Dundas Street West

  • promoting and welcoming the new Ontario Early Years Parkdale-High Park, Junction

  • providing a 6 month In-house Tutor Trainee Peer-to-Peer Program to enable high school students to serve in TCHC communities

Partnerships with Harbourfront Centre Camps

  • promoting and coordinating Harbourfront Summer Camp activities

  • coordinating large group applications and fee collection for Harbourfront Summer Camps

  • escorting kids to Summer Camp

  • acting as Standby/Emergency Care contact to campers

  • picking up younger kids from Summer Camp

  • received  Kids First Program Partnership with Harbourfront Centre Camps 2013

Parent/School Helps

  • accompanying Parents for Gifted/IEP and IPRC Meetings with School and School Board personnel

  • advocating on behalf of Parents various issues at schools

  • accompanying Parents to Doctors, Speech Therapists, Psychologists and other Professionals

  • empowering parents to strengthen their knowledge of school issues

  • instructing parents to carefully observe the changes that are coming through and know the impact, and effect.

  • instructing parents to seek additional support as needed…at times legal

Promoting the Creative Arts Community

  • networking with AGO-Art Gallery of Ontario for students with an interest in Arts

  • networking with Lowe’s Music/RCM in the Junction, for students with an interest in Music

  • networking with Creative Links Crafts for student with an interest in Handicrafts, Sewing, Jewelry Making

  • networking with ARTiculation Creative  Centre  in the Junction, for students with an interest in Visual Arts

  • utilizing the services of international Artists

Promoting the Sciences

  • networking with UofT  Faculty of Engineering for students with an interest in attending Deep Program/STEM

  • promoting the UofT Science and Engineering, Deep Program

  • networking with UofT for students interested in volunteering with the Deep Program 

Partnerships with the Navy League and Air Cadets

  • promoting and coordinating Navy League Cadets activities

  • participating in Fund Raiser Activities for the Cadets

  • attending Repatriation Ceremonies and other Commemorative Civic Ceremonies with our group of Cadets and their parents

  • promoting the Air Cadets Program

  • Supporting our Air Cadets in their participation

Promoting Community Events

  • encouraging East African mothers to form their own community groups in various TCHC locations

  • encouraging East African mothers to approach TCHC for use of Rec. Room/Meeting Facilities at various locations in the City

  • attending funeral gatherings with parents/families

  • recognizing Christian and Muslim religious Events-Ramadan, Eid, Youth conferences

  • attending and accompanying parents with children and volunteers to free Community Social Activities: TD Bank Shakespeare in the Park, MPP  Barbeque in the Park, TCHC Backyard BBQ, Daniel’s Corp Community Street BBQ,   Aboriginal Canadian Native Annual Pow Wow

  • approached Daniels Corporation for donation of Computers and Printers

High School Career Coaching

  • Hosting High School Students who are fulfilling  |OSSD Contract 40hrs Community Service

  • Career Coaching for Gr 11 and 12 Hosting Workshops for Resume Preparation,  Personal Deportment, Interview Skills

  • Career Coaching in Setting up and Maintaining Personal Portfolio

  • Maintaining highest quality service in a Social Service Environment

  • Encouraging High School students to apply for Merit Award
  • Developing Family International Travels for Resume Benefits

Community Groups

  • Building camaraderie and kinship among students with similar interests

  • positioning Gr 11 and Gr 12 students for the In-House Mentor/Mentee Program

  • Ensuring students who earn Certificates and Awards in the Community receive them for Portfolio
